Community Resources for Involvement

There are plenty of opportunities for students to get involved around Boone and the High Country in community service organizations and clinical settings.

Office of Community-Engaged Leadership Appalachian State

Community-Engaged Leadership at ASU is a good starting point with resources for volunteering with many community organizations. There are opportunities to volunteer in clinical related settings.

UNC Health Appalachian - Appalachian Regional Healthcare System

Students can volunteer at facilities within the UNC Health Appalachian system. Many students  volunteer at the Watauga Medical Center hospital location because of its proximity to campus. To volunteer, you need to complete a volunteer application, undergo two interviews, attend orientation, and commit to volunteering for a minimum or 100 total hours. The hospital often places pre-health students in clinical areas like the ER, nursing floors, and rehab units.

ARHS Community Outreach

In addition to volunteering at the hospital, there are opportunities available through the Community Health and Outreach Division.

Community Care Clinic

The Community Care Clinic is a free clinic that provides care to uninsured individuals living in the High Country. They provide services to patients several days a week and have both clinical and non-clinical volunteer opportunities. They have a strong ASU volunteer base of students, faculty, and staff. In fact, the clinic was started by a former ASU physics faculty member, Dr. Marion Peters, who went back to school to become a physician assistant.

Hunger and Health Coalition Free Pharmacy

The HHC Pharmacy is always in need of volunteers to help inventory donated drugs and prepare prescriptions for patient pick-up. You can find further information at the Hunger and Health Coalition volunteers page and can call them at 828-262-1628 for more information.
